Now I feel like it...
Hey all,

I don't dig going along with the crowd, so on the day after Thanksgiving I'll share what I am most thankful for.

And now, in no particular order of importance...

Friends: I have a new batch of amigos that I have made this last year, and sometimes it's hard to imagine I've only known these folks for as short a time as I have. I feel truly blessed to have so many cool folks in my life, and if I leave anyone out please don't get all offended.

Thank you Audrey & Mark, Ryan & Sarah, Chris & Lauren, Matt, Jason, Shaun, Pat, Jess & Felix, Josh & Jen, Heather, Brian, Ryan & Christina, Andy, Seth, Dan, Sarah, Sarah, Sarah (wtf?) LaRue, Leash, James, Jamez (Giving nerds like me hope since 2007), Mike, Matt, Dan, Dave, John, The Amazing Val & The Astounding Dean w/ the Incredible Violet, Scott & Mel, Enoz, Jayne, Shawn, Bruce, Bill, Cox & Gay (FUCK YOU, TOWNSEND!!!), and everyone else who has made my life a whole world better just by being part of it.

Family: This year has been a good year in getting to know my Family on a more human level. For the longest time I've always felt like the outside of the clan, due to the age difference. But now, I'm getting to know my siblings as people. And for that gift, I am thankful. My folks and I have always had a good relationship, and nothing has changed to make it any weaker. Thank you, fellow and former Townsends.

Work: My job kicks ass, and I know it. I'm well paid, the job is easy, no one is stepping on my throat to do better, and I work on the best show of our broadcast day. I know I was lucky that this job opened up when it did, but I'm more thankful that I'm damn good at what I do for a living. It wasn't luck that I got this job. It was all me.

I'm treated very well down here at WMTW. Respected amongst my peers and supervisors. I have my shift down to a strict routine, and I can work any other shift with very little prep time.
I'm thankful that I am where I am.

My Worst Thanksgiving: Back in 2004, I spent Thanksgiving in the hospital. It was a time where I had to beg to get my overalls back, and the scissors all had blunt ends. Few things are worse then a hospital Thanksgiving. That was a low point, and I honestly hope it was the lowest because it's behind me now. All of it.

My Best Thanksgiving: I bet Allison has no idea she is responsible for the best Thanksgiving this little demon ever had.

Back in 1993, my dear friend Allison Bankston and I were both attending The New England School of Broadcasting. I had gotten in the habit of not going home for holiday breaks. I liked to work in the campus radio station, perfecting my broadcasting skills and eating at the dining common for free.

It was on Thanksgiving in 1993. I was working at the radio station, 89.3 FM WHSN, when Allison called into the station. She had signed up for a shift at the station in the evening, but now didn't want to leave her family shindig. Without a moment of hesitation I offered to work her shift for her, to keep the station on the air. That would also mean that I would have worked a full 12 hours straight on the air, but I didn't mind. Everything was closed anyway. Might as well work. And, if I could work for a friend...all the better.

Allison thanked me, and I thought that was the end of it. But it wasn't. She fixed up a big box of Thanksgiving dinner and had her Father drop it off at the station for me. Light and dark meat from the bird (even one of the drumsticks), stuffing, potato, gravy, cranberry sauce, squash, biscuits, and a slice of pumpkin pie with a cup of cool whip on the side.

I was taken back by this. I was fully expecting to dine on nothing more then the MREs' I had brought with me for the day. As I sat in the studio lounge, playing a :20 minute Pink Floyd tune for just such an occasion, I tucked into the meal.

And it was fantastic. Not just the food (I'm sure it tasted great, don't get me wrong) but the idea behind it. Allison shared her family meal with me because I helped her enjoy it. That still marks as one of the serious high points of my young life here.

Thank you, Allison.

And there you have it, kids. Just a few of the things that I am thankful for.

Hurdy Gur,
